Orientalist scholar Bobur Giyosov was born on May 25, 1960, in Tashkent into a family of orientalists. In 1977, he graduated with honors from Secondary School No. 75 in the capital and the same year enrolled in the Arabic Department of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Tashkent State University. During his fourth year of study, as a talented student, he carried out an assigned mission in Libya as a military translator with Russian–Arabic and Arabic–Russian language combinations.
In 1984, the scholar began research on his candidate dissertation topic entitled “Soviet–Libyan Political, Economic, Technical, Scientific and Cultural Relations (1969–1987)” and in 1990 successfully defended his Candidate of Sciences (PhD) dissertation under the supervision of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Telman Sattorov.
During the 1980s, Bobur Giyosov translated Arabic short stories into Uzbek and published them in the newspaper “Tashkent Evening” under the column “Voice of the 20th Century”, as well as in the journals “Asia and Africa Today” (Moscow, Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences), “World Literature”, “Sharq Yulduzi”, and “Yoshlik”.
The scholar successfully completed the Advanced Translation Course at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow in 1986. Together with his colleague, professional simultaneous interpreter Anatoly Stepanenko, he co-authored a учебное пособие (training manual) entitled “Features of the Libyan Dialect”, which was published by the institute in 1986.
Throughout his professional career, he provided translation services for the Turkestan Military District, the Moscow Military District, the International Youth and Students Festival held in Moscow in 1985, as well as for various Arab delegations visiting Uzbekistan, continuously improving his professional skills.
During his academic career, the Arabist scholar participated in a number of research projects on the domestic and foreign policies of Arab countries at the Institute of Oriental Studies and the Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He also presented reports at international scientific conferences. Between 2000 and 2010, he took part in projects funded by grants of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan. He also completed the European Union’s TACIS project course “Multilateral Political Negotiations” in March 1999.
In 2001, Bobur Giyosov was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations of Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies. He contributed articles to all volumes of the National Encyclopedia of Uzbekistan and has published more than 70 scientific articles on international relations, Uzbekistan’s foreign policy, domestic and foreign policies of Eastern countries, diplomacy, and history.
Throughout his academic and pedagogical career, the orientalist improved his qualifications in Libya, Egypt, Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, as well as at universities and research institutes in these countries, and participated with presentations in international conferences and symposiums held there.
For his academic, pedagogical, and military service activities, he has been awarded numerous honorary certificates by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sredazirsovkhozstroy, the University of Oriental Studies, the Organizing Committee of the 12th World Festival of Youth and Students held in Moscow (1985), the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the Ministry of Defense of the USSR.
